A Limitless Conception

By Devapriya Menon Love can transcend boundaries formed by distance, sometimes even time. In this subtle rendition of the Japanese movie 'Kimi no Na wa' (Your Name), we explore the muddled up lives of two personages belonging to discrete timelines and places separated by great distance, who respond to the telepathic connection. Do they end up together, or does their connection succumb to the boundaries? Read to find out!    25.09.2021  The road ahead seemed unusually brighter with multicoloured flowers around him; the atypical environment did not throw his system into disarray. "This has been going on for a while now", he gave voice to his thoughts. He knew he had a calling, a calling to be elsewhere in a realm of nonchalance. "India today recorded 67,910 Covid cases; the death rates seem alarmingly higher", the exasperated teenager had been showing a tendency to read these gloom-ridden articles, first thing in the morning. Lately, a quintessential force h...

TEDxManipal hosts its first edition of TED Circles!

Image
By Anushka On 26th September, TEDxManipal organized its first TED Circles event based on "Imagination" over a zoom meeting with 25 participants. TED Circles aims at bringing small groups of scholars together to build honest conversations around significant ideas and global issues. The hosts introduced the event to all the attendees and familiarized them with the guidelines. Dr. Raghu Radhakrishnan, Director of International Affairs & Collaborations, MAHE, was welcomed as the guest of honour for the evening. The event started by displaying a thought-provoking TED talk by Charles Faulkner. He discussed Immanuel Kant's idea that Imagination is not about what we think but how we think. He quoted Kant's words from 1780, "We do not see the world the way it is; we see the world according to our instruments." He further bridged this theory to the advancement of science through the centuries; explaining how with each technical rise, our instruments advance, exten...

FOMO Investing

Image
By Srikruth Reddy  “Is everyone making money but you?” I t’s a tranquil Saturday afternoon; you thanked your professor and closed the MS Teams application, concluding your online classes for the day. You reach for your phone, and involuntarily, your fingers slide to Instagram to look at your scantily familiar online commune. You see a multicoloured ring around your classmate's profile picture and click on it to see what he is up to today. The story appears to have a screenshot of his investment portfolio’s rallying trendline. He captions it, “650% return!! Onwards and upwards!!!!!”.  Good for him, you think and slip to the Insta reels section.  Uninterested by a few daft dances, you keep scrolling, only to find a finance guru to lock your interest. He attempts to provoke your interest in a specific cryptocurrency by showing off his $2 million portfolio. He remarks how people who aren't investing in crypto are choosing to stay poor.  The next day at your family rendez...

The Art of Murder

Image
By Stacey Lilian Ever read a murder mystery and wondered how the author came up with it? Yeah, me too...... The morning sun rays sneaked in through the curtains, waking him up. Will went about his routine like any other day, brushed his teeth, took a shower, and meditated in solace. William Stilinski, a young, fair-skinned, taut-bodied, 6 feet tall man in his 30s, was an author by profession and earned enough to maintain his one-bedroom apartment in Texas. After he had relished his caramel cold coffee, he set about to do the next task of his daily routine, one that he religiously followed, writing his murder mystery.  He sat pleasantly in his teal blue barrel-back sofa that was positioned right across his vitrine. His attention was caught by the familiar Writer’s Digest Award kept on the top shelf of the vitrine, an award he was immensely proud of and for good reason too. His hazel eyes meet the peculiar collection of objects he had arranged on the shelf below, a neon pink no...

Consapiracy Theories

Image
By Gautam Prabhu Ever come across people who believe that the moon landing was fake or that vaccines cause autism? Of course, you have. In this article, we discuss how such conspiracy theories arise, how it affects society and how to be on the lookout for them. “Climate change is a hoax”, writes Sudhir on his WhatsApp group full of middle-aged people going through a midlife crisis, as the third cyclone in 2 months destroys his neighbourhood. Just one of the hundreds of conspiracy theories going around. Conspiracy theories...hmmm. A term you might have heard several times in the past few years. What exactly is a conspiracy theory? When a group of people believe in something that defies most logical reasoning, garners utter disdain from experts and lacks substantial evidence to back it up, it is called a conspiracy theory. Most conspiracy theories believe in some sinister plot orchestrated by a powerful group of people. People who would do anything to benefit themselves. I mean, why...

Ruin- The Prequel

Image
By Adarshkrishnan B. In the forest of a desolate realm, a runner encounters an ancient evil. Could this be the end? It was late at night in the vast fores t of the Forbidden Realm; the once bountiful plain had now become a barren wasteland filled with creatures of the night. Suddenly the eerie silence was broken by the unmistakable sound of footsteps. A man sprinted through the freezing mist of the marsh at an unnatural pace. He moved at such rapid speeds that his afterimage left a green hue in the surrounding air. His face was marked with a determined sense of urgency, as he leaped over a creek flowing with water red as blood. The deafening silence of the forest provided no solace to the runner as he scanned his surroundings to see if he was still being trailed. After confirming that the dark presence was no longer in pursuit, he relaxed a little but just couldn’t swing the pensive feeling of unease. As the man turned around, he thought to himself, “Alright, I have to get out of ...

Penance - A Prelude

Image
By Adarshkrishnan B.  It was a cold winter’s night, as Colt solemnly stood over a grave with tear laden eyes. The harsh winter gales stung on contact with his skin, but he paid no heed. Suddenly a sound emanated from the marble tomb that he stood only inches away from, he stumbled backwards in fright as a girl crawled her way out of the dirt and even though her sockets were devoid of eyeballs it seemed as if she was staring into his very soul. She innocently asked, “Why couldn’t you save me, Daddy”? She cried tears of blood before she gripped his throat with her cold lifeless hands. Colt jolted upright from his almost lucid nightmare with sweat trickling down his forehead. With a deep breath, he collected his disturbed mind and grimaced, as the painful memories of the dreaded day came flooding back. As he stood up and peered out of the window of his mundane two-bedroom flat he was greeted by the unpleasant image of a city riddled by infernal riots just a year ago. Barren roads and ...

A fresher’s life at MIC

By Sanskriti Airon Are you someone looking forward to pursuing Media Communication from Manipal but aren’t sure whether you should go for it or not? Well, one year ago, I was in the same situation as you. No matter how much I read about this place, I always had unanswered questions in mind. Only when I talked to a few alumni from the college was I able to feel better about taking this huge decision which was to shape the next three years of my life. One thing I was told by everyone I talked to- “Don’t worry so much. Just go for it! You’re going to love it.” Before joining the Manipal Institute of Communication (formerly known as the School of Communication), I did find it on top of every ranking list I referred to. However, the idea of shifting to a completely different part of the country made me a little uneasy. Honestly speaking, I wasn’t very sure about my decision of coming here for further studies and like any other person, keeping a few options for colleges closer to my hometown...
